Malone Engineering Center — 2005

Description

The Malone Center, completed in 2005, is a LEED Gold-certified laboratory building for the School of Engineering at Yale. Also known as the Engineering Research Building, the Malone is located on the corner of Prospect and Trumbull streets. The design embraces the adjacent Farmington Canal Greenway, a popular place to go running.  In keeping with the University’s sustainability initiative, the Malone Center has design features aimed at saving energy and reducing the building’s environmental impact. Storm water, for example, is retained and reused. The waste-stream of the lab water, meanwhile, is purified and recycled as toilet water, which allows for a savings equivalent to 95,000 gallons of water per year. All materials used in the construction of the Malone Center have high recycle contents and were selected to minimize their environmental impact as well as the need for harsh chemicals when being cleaned. The Malone Center was designed to be as energy efficient as possible. In fact, it uses almost 10% less energy than allowed by the State Energy Code.
