History
One of four National Historic Landmarks on campus, this Italianate villa designed by Henry Austin was completed in 1849 for Professor James Dwight Dana. The Dana family, who lived in the home for over a century, presided over a renovation in 1905, adding a north wing to the existing structure. Acquired by the University in 1962, the building now houses the statistics department. In 1996, the Dana House underwent a larger and more extensive renovation. During that project, the exterior of the building was completely renovated and restored and the remaining woodwork stripped and repainted. Additionally, all lead paint and asbestos roofing materials were removed and new windows were installed to improve energy savings.
Did You Know?
During the renovation process, paint studies revealed the building’s original color scheme, which was carefully replicated for use on the renovated facade.
